I keep thinking I find one and then I start reading reviews.
Besides cleaning well, I just need one that comes in black and is fairly quiet. Doesn't have to be whisper. It's just that I often work from home and my office is open and right next to the kitchen. Price $400ish.
Thanks for any (good or dear Lord, don't buy that one!) recommendations

(168 posts)I know it always gets the highest ratings, but we hated ours. Never cleaned properly, and after a couple of years the front panel with the buttons just came off one day!
We now have a Kitchen Aid, and I really like it. Kenmore (Sears brand) is also pretty good I hear.

(36,827 posts)I've owned it for a few years now. Quiet enough you barely hear it running. Washes quite well.

(19,558 posts)It's a few years old and has never given me a moment of grief. Cleans well, and quiet.

(36,827 posts)I haven't seen any that get consistently high reviews. There's always a number of people who are never going to be satisfied with them no matter how well they work. Much depends on how you use it and what type of detergent is used.

(16,061 posts)I've been perfectly happy with my 2 year old Kenmore from Sears...and they have a hellva deal right now on the whisper
Retail 709....on sale for 449.00 Hard to beat that.

I've always had good luck with Kenmore.

(115,677 posts)as they are quieter. I've been very happy with this model, it has a couple filters that can be cleaned, which I appreciate. It works, has several options and cycles.

(39,961 posts)MUCH easier to keep clean, and works great.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,656 posts)I've had it for about 3 years. It's very quiet; it gets the dishes much cleaner than my old dishwasher (a Kenmore, I think?), and I've had absolutely no trouble at all with it. My brother also got a Bosch (newer and fancier than mine) and they have also been very happy with it.
Sweet Freedom
(3,995 posts)You contradict those above you! Crap, we were on a roll.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,656 posts)My Bosch works like a charm, no buttons falling off. The newer one my brother got doesn't have any controls on the front at all and the only way you can tell it's running is that it shines a little red light on the floor in front of it.
Sweet Freedom
(3,995 posts)I'll check it out, thanks!

(31,380 posts)since we have an open floor plan kitchen to living/dining area.
I haven't bought appliances since we built this house 5 years ago, so I don't know if prices still hold,
but think about ordering from AJ Madison. No one could beat their prices here locally when we built.

PS: If you're not in NY, you won't pay sales tax when they ship it. I have used AJ Madison for appliances for two houses and never had
a problem with delivery, either.

(22,845 posts)We had to buy a new dishwasher about a year ago and we hate it. Used to have a KitchenAid, which was wonderful.
Sweet Freedom
(3,995 posts)The dishwasher in my house is a GE bought by the previous owner in 2003. Never had a problem until last week when apparently some poor critter decided to chew a hole in the pump.
My house also came with a dryer that was bought in 1985. Works great!
Aerows
(39,961 posts)I'm with you. Stay the heck away from any appliances associated with GE. Washers, refrigerators, you name it, they will be plagued by trouble until you throw your hands up and get a new one.
GE is landfill waiting to happen.

(1,725 posts)We love it. Quiet, efficient and high quality. We we never happy with Kenmore products over many years. Poor quality. The new Bosch is wonderful.

(60,010 posts)and we have a Kenmore, It;s black, very quiet, we paid 400/500, somewhere around there.
I can hear the swish swish sound, but it is not too loud, our house is extremely quiet, so small sounds do carry.
One tip....the plastic hose that goes from the dishwasher to the water line in our set up, had to go thru a hole in a plywood side
between the kitchen sink area and the dishwasher.
Every time the water filled, 'cause it was hot, the hose expanded, rubbing in that hole, until it caused a leak. We had to get help in pulling the washer out, putting in a new hose, and padding the hole area.
Sweet Freedom
(3,995 posts)Hope it didn't flood!
dixiegrrrrl
(60,010 posts)Usually I put an old towel on the bottom of the under sink cabinet so I can feel for leaks every few weeks, cause they are easy to miss until they rot away the bottom of the area.
In this case, the trick paid off.

(39,961 posts)is asking for irritation, aggravation and general suckage until you replace it with something made by somebody else.
Please don't ask me to go on a rant about the refrigerator and the washing machine, because both of them were GE's and pieces of shit until replaced.
Don't go there.

(1,013 posts)We got a bosch dishwasher for less than $200 at Lowes a couple of years ago. It was missing a kick plate that we ordered for about $20. We've had no problems with the items we bought.
mnhtnbb
(31,380 posts)I didn't know Lowes had a scratch and dent section.
We have a Sears outlet here, but the customer service is nonexistent and thus, should be avoided at all costs.
nclib
(1,013 posts)hhgregg and best buy. We got a refrigerator from Lowes that had been returned because the woman who bought it didn't like the way the sides looked. We got a small freezer that had been returned at Best Buy. And we got a washing machine from hhgregg that was the floor model. The store never transferred the washer to the warehouse for delivery so we got a new one at the floor model price. We always check for returned or scratch and dent when we need something. No problems so far.

(610 posts)Last year I got a Kitchen Aid which I really like. But I so wish I had gotten the extra little upper rack above the top rack. I can see where it would be very useful with knives, spatulas, lids etc. It would have been extra cost but I can see where it would have been worth it. Some of those things just don't fit well in the silverware basket.
Sweet Freedom
(3,995 posts)Adjustable upper rack to make room for pots or tall glasses.
Sweet Freedom
(3,995 posts)Okay, I think I've narrowed it down to two:
The Kenmore 13229
http://www.sears.com/kenmore-24inch-built-in-dishwasher-w-stainless-steel/p-02213229000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1
or
The Bosch Ascenta 50 db
http://www.lowes.com/pd/Bosch-Ascenta-50-Decibel-Built-In-Dishwasher-Black-Common-24-in-Actual-23-625-in-ENERGY-STAR/3409008
Both same price with similar features. I know the Kenmore will cost an additional $175 for extras + installation. I don't yet know what Lowes will charge to install the Bosch but whatever it is, I will have to wait until July 2 for delivery.

(3,051 posts)Read about this in consumer reports recently.
I can't remember the exact details, but if you hunt for the article, you can figure out how to get the same mechanicals as a really top model in an off brand.
I do remember the big thing they liked was a stainless steel insides.
Sweet Freedom
(3,995 posts)It does, however raise the price, but I think it will be worth it.

(3,051 posts)I lived most of my life in either NYC or Washington DC. Both had relatively good water, at least at the time.
I've relocated to live near my son (because I am older than dirt and he and his wife are doctors kind enough to have built a house for me on his property) in NM. The water here is very hard on all things metal unless SS or coated.

(21,675 posts)buy it at Costco. They don't sell junk, and their warranty is ironclad. You can find dw in black on their website and they deliver FREE. (no, i don't own costco stock or work for them!)
Sweet Freedom
(3,995 posts)Just came back from buying one. Never would have thought of Costco. Oh, well thanks anyway!
