your dog will not be judgmental, and will love you no matter what ...

and sometimes, you need to talk to someone, and a dog won't recoil in horror if you have to unload what horrors you faced. In fact, the dog will comfort you when you are sad.

I hoped that would be gathered from the post without needing explaining ...
