Does not necessarily have to be in order. When making my list, I considered not so much, records sold, but level of musicianship. Longevity, song writing ability, etc.
Allman Brothers Band
Little Feat
Eagles
Creedence
REM
Number9Dream
(1,560 posts)- Allman Brothers Band
- Frank Zappa / Mothers of Invention

I'd include Return To Forever, but they're not rock.

(11,546 posts)they kind of help to change music in the 90s for my generation. Then of course I had to add some of my favourite all time musicians (from ANY generation!):
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Rage Against the Machine
Buddy Holly and the Crickets
Jimi Hendrix Experience
cemaphonic
(4,138 posts)Obviously, Hendrix was the centerpiece, but the rest of the band was British, and the band formed in the UK.

(3,569 posts)The American dream, consciousness and musical history all in one band. From The Carter Family to Berio, the Dead remain the thread that runs through America.
Easily the most influential band in history not named the Beatles. Almost every band touring today credits the Dead for their influence. From Sonic Youth, the Talking Heads to My Morning Jacket and Dave Matthews Band. All of them.

(64,875 posts). . .hard to figure with your criteria, how Van Halen isn't on the list. Very good musicianship at two spots and an all time great in the third. Songs were clever, loaded with double entendre and they were around forever.
I think you've overrated Little Feat, although i like them. And, full disclosure, i think Lowell was overrated as a guitar player. His slide work is super cool, but he's pretty pedestrian in normal fretting.
Not a giant Eagles fan, but they belong.
Credence absolutely.
REM, i would have replaced with Talking Heads. Equally long careers. TH had a far greater breadth of styles and made some enormously adventurous records with a cast of great players.
But, different strokes. . .

(64,875 posts)TH is one of my favorite three bands ever, so top 10 would never be good enough for me.
KamaAina
(78,249 posts)Mom went through a Seger phase intense enough that the cassette broke!
Others not yet named:
Chicago
The Radiators (NOLA band that never quite hit the big time)
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Jefferson Airplane/Starship

(3,569 posts)I'm a huge Fishhead. Seen em a big bunch of times. Another band that will get their due someday, just not right now. Lots of people they influenced. I miss those guys a ton.
Suck the head!

(3,569 posts)Guys were major influences on so many bands that are out there doing the bluegrass/Americana music it is not funny. The first jamband if you must say. Guys kill it huge too with Billy Payne (from Little Feat) on keyboards now.
excellent band:
bobbobbins01
(1,681 posts)I've seen them live a few times, once was a straight bluegrass show, and the other was more of their jamband style music. Very different shows by some fantastic musicians.

(3,569 posts)Even got married because of them. Seen em at least 100 times and Vince has become a good friend. But the story is taking some time to write.

(3,569 posts)Shame that. One of the all time great bands.

(7,482 posts)Spirit
Alice Cooper-the whole band was called Alice Cooper before Vincent became the personification of the name.
Phish
Booker T. and the MG's
Mendocino
(7,482 posts)J. Geils-early career was solid
Areosmith-not at all my favorite, but worth a mention
Collective Soul-not a huge pile of material, but they did their stuff so well
Fleetwood Mac-Without the Americans Buckingham/Nicks, who would have ever really listened to them? (but I really like Brit Christine Mcvie, a lot more than Stevie)
ghostsinthemachine
(3,569 posts)Fleetwood Mac was my favorite band way before Nicks & Buckingham came around. The Bob Welch era was amazing. "Hypnotized" was as good as anything in their catalog. Future Games, Mystery to me were all big records. Bob also gave Stevie Nicks her first public appearance at CalJam as part of his band (the date on this is wrong, should be 1974)
I saw this version, and got tear gassed, In Stockton at Billy Herbert field.
Then there is the Kiln House, Bare Trees era with Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kerwin and an uncredited Christine McVie. Again, some of my favorite albums. Love the song "Blood On the Floor"......Hi Ho Silver.....
Of course there is the original with Peter Green (Who wrote Santana's hit, Black magic Woman.) Then Play On is a great album.
Or the bogus band that toured in 75. Got booed off the stage at Winterland but were quite sucessful before they got found out in SF.
Some info and music from each version of the band: http://ultimateclassicrock.com/fleetwood-mac-lineup-changes/
Mendocino
(7,482 posts)Yes they were built around Brit Eric Clapton, but the sound was US Delta and Chicago blues. They were 4/5 American. Besides Duane Allman blew EC aside with his playing. Bobby Whitlock wrote or co-wrote nearly every original song and contributed better vocals than Eric.
Enrique
(27,461 posts)since they haven't been mentioned yet.

(3,569 posts)Amazing band. They average playing one song they have never played before, one song they only play once that year, one song they only play once that tour at every show. 200 songs at anytime can pop up anywhere in the set. Their songs are amazingly well written, some with the Grateful Dead lyricists....(Listen to the lyrics in Little Hands or Rollover.....)
They cover the most amazing array of music from Hot Rize to Paul Simon (they actually were planning a tour with Paul Simon as his backing band) to Coltrane......and every other musical universe...from bluegrass to musique Concrete.
Easily the best keyboard player (Kyle Hollingsworth) anywhere and the best acoustic guitar player on the planet. (Bill Nershi)
Great lights and the theme shows on NYE and Hulaween are stupendous shows featuring music, parades, costumes etc to fit the theme.

Props to Creedence as well.

(95,337 posts)Two of those groups are already in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I suspect that the Foo Fighters will get in their first attempt (although lead singer David Grohl is already in there with Nirvana).
Miles Archer
(18,837 posts)The original albums...before Drake Levin, Mike Smith, Phil "Fang" Volk and Jim "Harpo" Valley left...are still "garage rock" classics.
