K-9 officer retiring city auctioning the DOG

Here is a link to the Gofundme page:

https://www.gofundme.com/yumeagsk

The officer was told he could buy Ajax for $3500.00 and when he went to buy him, the city officials said they were going in another direction. Marietta, Ohio 45750

I hope they get to stay together.

For goodness sake, Ajax and he should be able to retire together. Kicking and hoping to be able to donate to this tomorrow.

They respond mostly to their handler/partner and can be aloof and temperamental toward others. This doesn't make sense to me. It will be stressful for the dog to retire with a stranger.

He kept his dogs.

He has a few stories to tell.

I guess they sound funnier coming from this older little English couple in their Manchester accents. The time the postman handed her a package and ended up with a dog latched on his arm. No damage as the postman had a heavy coat on.

Not to mention the bond that they already have. This dog, for all intents and purposes, is a law enforcement officer. Best to keep him with his partner rather than auction him off to the highest bidder who may not ultimately be able to handle him. He is not a "pet" in the usual definition of the term, at least to my mind.

It's just common sense. You don't separate a dog from his people, especially in this case.

Get them to amend the statute to exempt animals from the property definition. The city has to follow the law as it is right now, as heartless and nonsensical as it is.

I don't think I've ever seen this much outrage in Marietta. The Go Fund Me total exceeded the first request and the person who made it raised the amount and it is exceeded again. I personally think that the officer should go to the auction with at least $11,500.00 I was looking at trained police dog values last night and asking price for an untrained 2 year old Belgian Malinois is $11,500.00. However, no matter what value Ajax has as a trained police dog, he is priceless to Officer Hickey.

Thank you for your interest and support.

So he won't actually know how much other others are bidding (assuming anyone else is going to bid).

As of just now Jan. 31, 2016 1:55 PM est, the Go Fund Me request has raised $44,451.00. News outlets have picked up the story and it is spread literally all over the world. People from all over the U.S. and other countries are leaving comments on the news sites and Marietta, Ohio facebook page. The response to this story is amazing. Marietta is obeying a state law, so I hope that people who care about this story will contact the Ohio Legislature to get the law changed.

I read that Ohio is the only state east of the Mississippi that allows dogs in general (such as puppy mills, bankrupt pet shops) to be auctioned, and if that hasn't changed, it should!

When I lived in Florida during the 70s I went to yard sales and flea markets nearly every weekend for over two years. I probably only missed 4 or 5 weekends. I still have the several thousand albums I bought. At some point in the next few years I have to find a dealer to take them off my hands. I should check the flea market here to see if there are any record dealers.

Sorry I didn't follow up sooner. Officer Hickey will keep Ajax, woohoo! The Go Fund Me donations will be used to buy protective gear for other K-9 dogs. Here are some links about how the story turned out:
