...is simple: she's Palpatine's granddaughter, and heir to the Empire. Obviously, she's connected to someone who knows the Force well, and everyone assumes this is either Luke, or Ben Kenobi, or Vader-thru-Leia. And she's someone whom everyone in the Galaxy takes for granted has some importance. (For example--Chewy, especially after Han dies, taker her presence aboard the *Millenium Falcon* totally for granted.) But I think Kylo Ren's mysterious master is probably Palpatine's son, and that he's trying to engineer events so that Rey and Kylo end up together. If I'm right, then Rey will face massive challenges to avoid the Dark Side, just as Kylo will be tempted to the Light Side.

(63,203 posts)IMO it would be better if she weren't related to anyone. Too much of the universe has already hinged on the antics of half a dozen people.
And for Yoda's sake, we'd better not find out that Finn is Lando's son, as I've seen suggested many disastrous times on social media.

(4,138 posts)"Luke, I am your father" was an awesome inspired plot twist, but they've been chasing that high for movie after movie, and it's time for something new. There's obviously some connection though - I hope that she turns out to be the daughter of one of Luke's students from his Jedi training project. That would set up one hell of a rematch between her and Kylo Ren.

(3,335 posts)Her story parallels Luke's
Luke's light saber called to her
In the first trailer that came out, we heard Luke's speech about how the force runs strong in his family
Probably wrong, but it's fun to speculate!

Thankfully, I don't think Disney will go there.

(22,340 posts)I mean, sure, what the hell do I know, but he would have realized that a Jedi loving went SOOOOOO damn well with Anikan.
I hope she's someone unrelated. I feel like/hope there is a mindfuck coming.

(63,203 posts)IIRC, it goes as follows:
As has been noted, the speech is lifted from the moment in EPVI when he reveals to Leia that she'd kissed her brother on the mouth, with the final line newly added.
The obvious argument is that "he's telling Rey that he's her father, but he doesn't want to say it directly, so he's laying out his family's history with the Force so that she can make the connection herself."
Possibly, but again that's too obvious, and it would be greatly disappointing. Further, that would make Luke kind of an asshole for abandoning his daughter on a shithole planet, wouldn't it? Why not idyllic Naboo or any of the zillion gorgeous planets in the galaxy? Why maroon her on the one that most resembles the desolate litter box where he grew up?
The way I'm reading his speech, he's rattling off his family's Force-lineage to illustrate the weighty responsibility that it entails, but that doesn't mean that he's talking to his daughter (if indeed he's speaking to Rey at all.)
If she's his daughter, it presents a few narrative challenges, too. When did Luke get down with her mother? How did he keep the pregnancy/birth/newborn secret from everyone? What about the Jedi rules against love & procreating? And wouldn't this all apply equally to Ben Kenobi, who's also rumored to be Rey's ancestor?
For that matter, what the heck does he mean by "my sister has it?" What did Leia ever do Force-wise, other than hear Luke calling from that weather vane?

(8,217 posts)Kylo Ren is part of the Knights of Ren and not a Sith.
Same as Supreme Leader Snoke who is not a Sith either. They are like an offshoot it seems.
Snoke also looks similar to the aliens that specialize in cloning (which I will get to later).
I have read a few theories where they say Rey is probably Leia and Hans daughter sent away after Ben Solo turned dark. Where they cite that he is much older, and was sent to training to Luke at his young age(to correct his problem-child tendencies) so he would not have known of a sister, who is then hidden from him and his new master. The timing seems to fit, as Kylo Ren is at least 10+ years older than Ray, and they seem to have a connection.
Saying that, one could also look towards the Disney XD series "Star Wars: Rebels" and expand the universe beyond the Skywalker family.
She could be a descendant of a force sensitive infant...
However, what I personally would enjoy would be that she's a female Luke or Anakin clone similar to a famous bounty hunter. The SW universe has the technology, and heck, they made Anakin be a messiah-like individual where he didn't have a father. If she were, she could have been a by-product of a project funded by the shattered empire. Now that would be fun.

but, I've also heard speculation that Rey is Obi Wan's *grand*daughter as well - since the Jedi order fell during Revenge of the Sith, he was no longer bound by the no marriage/no offspring rule and possibly produced a child with whoever Rey's mother is.
There is also some speculation that Snoke is Darth Plagueis - the Sith Lord who taught Palpatine how to beat death, then was killed by Palpatine. Maybe he was only mostly dead?
edited to change it to granddaughter

(22,340 posts)it would have to be Ben's granddaughter. It's been 30 years since Return of the Jedi. Or Ben's great-granddaughter.

I'm pulling for her being unrelated to characters from previous films but pretty sure I'll be disappointed.

(63,203 posts)I'd rather find out that her ancestor is the as yet unidentified "another" that Yoda mentioned to Ben after Luke flew off to try to get himself killed on Cloud City.
