silly pet peeve.

i don't like the word "folks" - it's like some kind of forced "folksiness" or something. i wish PO and his wife would both just say "people."
people are having a hard time. i'm trying to talk to these people. people just want to take care of their families and know they won't go bankrupt if they get sick. people need jobs. and so on.
i know it's kind of silly, but it gets on my nerves, folks.

1. I say folks and howdy and y'all

been doing it all my life. :-/

But I'm not the pet peeve police so don't pay no nevermind to me. I recognize and accept your right to hold any peeve you wish, pet or otherwise. Not that you need my permission either way.

3. I have the same silly pet peeve

But it applies to everyone, I sort of cringe when anyone uses it. I don't know why.

6. It's common use in Chicago.

But, if you post this in Meta you could probably have it put on the DU banned words list. I'd be officially screwed, since I still use it. You folks would have to get along without me.

8. lol

well thank you for that, because the prez and wife are from Chicago, so i can get over this knowing that it actually does come naturally to them. i read it as affectation but clearly for many it is not.

18. Kin actually means "child" in German and Yiddish

It's the last syllable of my Ashkenazi last name, so I probably wouldn't take offense to be called that. Only for the fact that if you're over twelve it's innaccurate!

10. I greatly prefer "folks" to "youse"

I'm OK with "Y'all" too.

All are preferred to being called late for dinner.

11. lol

i say "youse" once a day - when i'm leaving the house to go to work and tell my aminals that i love them. i don't think i've heard that particular atrocity out of the president though, thankfully.

14. we visited my wife's relatives in Indiana last year

and one of the aunties kept saying "you'uns" but she said it so fast it sounded like "yins"
"Yins goin to the mall?" "Yins like that CSI show?"
It was so different it was fun and I found myself talking to her the most while we were up there...I don't think she was native to Indiana though - just retired there as that is where a lot of her kin folk are.

15. I used to hear that

word all the time from a bunch of cousins who live in CT (Branford)...

You's.

I also don't like the word "folks", and "you's" sounds sort of lowbrow, and the use of "you people" is, I gather, verboten even if it's not meant to point to someone's race or ethnicity.

So I say "you guys".

Which is probably as lowbrow as "you's", but whatever...

19. One of my pet peeves are people that

can't type a whole name and expect others to know who they are talking about.

And if "PO" is the person I think it is, it is also disrespectful of that person and his position.

on edit: stupid mistake.

i think it may be a regional thing, but growing up in CA "my folks" and "my parents" were synonymous.
