Whe rains, it pours...

After an awful, dry, dry summer -- ok, not California dry, but still, bone freakin' dry -- my poor pasture is hanging by a thread and I've limited turnout to 2 hours/day with hoses running 3 hours/day trying to keep the pastures by the barn green.

I was pleasantly surprised when my hayman said price would be the same this year as last.

Then they delivered -- the bales are *half* the size as last year. Literally half, as in 20 pounds vs 40-50 lbs. A different son delivered than has been here in the past and he stacked the bales really loosely to try to hid their size. Like I wouldn't notice when I could lift a bale with one hand easy, versus struggling to heave one of last year's 2 handed into the wheelbarrow.

So he left me with no room for more hay and I had to get hay in early because I used up last year's early with the limited pasture. And I know from experience that 1. they ran out of hay the last dry year we had and that year wasn't nearly as dry as this, and 2. I may or may not be able to bring in more hay in the winter, except to store in my emergency shed by the driveway, which I just filled with other stuff a month ago.

So now I'm supplementing the hay with beet pulp and bran mash diluted to soup so they don't scarf it down in 5 minutes.

Anyway, back to the "when it rains, it pours." We're about to get an inch overnight, and the 5-8" tomorrow!!!! And then showers for several days and then a sunny day or two and then moar rain! And the temps are staying way up, and there's still enough daylight for the grasses to grow!!!!!

WOOHOO!!!!!! My RAINDANCE finally came through!!!!!
