Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI know auto insurance varies from state to state but my agent told me...
that every person with a valid driver's license in Georgia is required to have auto insurance.
The issue is this: what if you don't have a car? What if you don't drive? Insurance is tied to the car, not the person.
The personal issue is this: my son refuses to drive. He lives away at college and doesn't have a car. For whatever reason, he always hated driving. Barely wanted to get a license. We made him learn to drive but he hated it. I am not going to force him to drive. Apparently all of his friends know about this and are more than willing to do the driving all the time. He hasn't driven a car in a year and four months.
So I called my agent and asked him to take my son off the policy and he told me that he can't - legally. Now, what I think he means is HIS policy is to insure every member of our household.
You can get a driver's license without having a car. Unless you actually drive, how would anyone know if you did or did not have insurance?
Your thoughts on this?

(16,245 posts)Maybe that is the way around it if he doesn't want to drive. I always thought auto insurance was tied to the car, not the driver.

(16,334 posts)I just had the idea to call another agent. I'm not sure why I didn't think about it before posting.
He said same thing: insurance is under the name of the person who owns the registration/title. My kids can be on the policy and they can provide an exclusion for the one who won't drive. He said it is NOT true that every licensed driver has to have auto insurance. Every car must.
I don't know what's up with my agent. I even asked him stuff like "Well, what about if I let my neighbor drive my car to the store and she crashes? The car is insured but I don't have to add my neighbor!"

(64,931 posts)If he is staying in a dorm, then where is his legal address. I would assume that it is your household, which may be the reason for you having to include him on your policy. If he does not live with you at all and has his own home address, then you shouldn't be required to include him on your policy.
