4. About 12 years ago, that was almost me

After graduation from her school on Kohala mountain, my daughter took us on a tour around the island, which included a night walk in pitch blackness to the edge of a cliff where Kilauea's output was flowing off the edge of a ledge into the sea. Sometimes the path we were walking over was, to put it mildly, rather "recent." Near the beginning of the path on the way up ,there was a "No Parking" sign. Or, to be more accurate, what was left of it. The sign was there, plus about 3 inches of the metal stand. The rest was buried in volcanic rock with which Madam Pele had chosen to enhance the landscape.
