Who is an expert on Anime?

Last edited Sat Sep 12, 2015, 02:04 PM - Edit history (1)

What do us old folks need to know about Anime to sound like we know what we are talking about to the X Gens.

First thing I learned was that Anime is not necessarily kiddie cartoons.

The anti-magical girl Madoka Magica series is one of my favorites.

Anime is definitely not kiddie cartoons; there are very dark themes and some are overtly sexual. What have you watched?

Probably won't. Unless an animated show has clever dialogue I have trouble connecting. That said, it probably shows the depth of my ignorance on the topic.

In that there's a show for every kind of genre and type out there.

(this is my area of specialty).

There are about 50 new shows that start every season, with four seasons per year. Shows average 12-13 episodes, often adapting other works. Some run for a couple of seasons, sometimes with a season skip to give space for the production. Others run for years and years. One that I watch, One Piece, is at 708 episodes now.

It's impossible to really "sound like you know what you're talking about" in this area because it's like trying to do that for Hollywood. It's a matter of knowing a particular area or something and being knowledgable there.

Probably the first thing I should do is find out what shows they're into.

There is so much anime out there. Have a conversation and find out what they like, then explore from there.

When they talk about the shows they like, ask for analogues to shows you might know, which can give an avenue for discussion about it.
