A woman is recovering from two broken ankles sustained when a dolphin leapt aboard her family's boat near a harbor in Orange County.

The Orange County Register reports (http://bit.ly/1R49Hui) that Chrissie Frickman was boating with her husband and two children on Father's Day when they saw a pod of dolphins swimming alongside them. One of the mammals leapt aboard the boat, knocking Frickman over and landing on top of her legs.

An Orange County Sheriff's Department Harbor Patrol boat responded and Dirk Frickman steered toward Dana Point Harbor. He splashed water on the 350-pound mammal to keep it alive as it thrashed around and bled from cuts.

The dolphin was eventually returned to the water and swam away, and Frickman says maybe his family will keep a little more distance next time.

A lot of people in boats are encouraging the dolphins to swim in their wake.
It's illegal, but it's known that the tourist boats will feed them, when
no on is watching.

That way, the tourists all get a show. Locals do it too, so they can
video the dolphins jumping in the wake.

They are not pets. They are wild animals, and should be treated as such.

It's a numbers game, more people, more encounters, and often
the dolphin will be the loser.
