The lyrics work flipped any way, from him to her, and from ma to pa. "Rodeo" can be metaphor for any intense pursuit, good or bad, by a partner that's damaging the romantic relationship.

When she visits me my ma ain't got one good word to say; have a hunch she was as wild...
