One of the kids we worked with in our small town mentoring group just called to tell us his post-high school plans.
Our tutoring ends at 8th grade and trying to keep in touch with the kids when they get in HS and get so busy is hard. We've seen him about 6 times since he got in HS.
His grades were mediocre, but I always told his Mom that he was really smart. If he ever found something that excited him, I thought he he could do really well. And he did.
He called tonight to tell us he is going to shoot for a pre-med course when he goes to college. His grades are straight A now and he has focus. I am so proud of him.
I so hope his dream comes true. He has ability, if he wants it.
Well I had some tears in my eyes, to say the least.

(62,406 posts)the group is for kids who might otherwise not be able to go to college. Poverty and immigrants mostly.
We tutor and raise scholarship money.
We have worked with 5 kids in that program and all have hugely exceeded expectation.
Another boy I would have been happy if he graduated - now he is working to go to college in Germany.

(2,004 posts)You know telling him and his mom that he was smart may have had a huge impact. He may have never realized how smart he was, until you let him know. Way to go!

(34,373 posts)designed to assist at-risk and non-traditional students complete secondary school & enter postsecondary educational programs. One young African American woman was referred to us. She was a high school dropout, 20 years old, with 3 children. She was determined to better her situation. We helped her get her GED, enter community college, then a 4 year university. She graduated with honors & entered a master's program in education. One of my proudest professional moments came when I got an invitation to her graduation. She's now a school administrator in the Detroit area and will finish her doctorate in April.
I know something of what you're feeling. It's great, isn't it? Congratulations again!

(62,406 posts)I see what we did as getting these kids to see beyond our little town and realize that they were capable.
Their families are all 100% behind better education, but there were things they just didn't understand. So we worked in a great atmosphere.
I don't see we did much more than as Bill Cosby once said "kicked them back into play."
