Historic Tokyo Bank Heist

December 10, 1968, a uniformed man pulled over a bank car in Tokyo. He explained to the driver that police told him dynamite had been planted in the vehicle. The four passengers got out while the uniformed man crawled under the car. After a moment he rolled out, shouting that the car was going to explode. When the passengers ran away, he got in the car and drove off, stealing 294,307,500 yen ($2,681,008) in broad daylight. It remains the single largest heist in Japan’s history. The thief is still at large.

(360 yen = 1 dollar), the dollar equivalent would have been $817,521. Still, it was quite a haul, considering that 20,000 yen was considered to be a good monthly wage at the time.
