(21,925 posts)In the late 80s, early 90s I used to go to a club religiously in downtown Los Angeles located at 6th and Normandie called "Dragpn Lady". It was a place like no other, kind of sleazy but with incredible color. The owner named Ming was an ethnic Chinese Vietnamese lady who created a club with the vibe of a B-girl type bar of Tu Do street in Saigon during the days of the Vietnam War. There were pretty Asian girls everywhere, who would come and sit with you and talk if you bought them an expensive drink. All the girls had accents, adding to the "period" vibe. Half the patrons were Vietnam vets, some of whom practically lived there it was so popular. On Friday nights there were so many guys there reliving the Vietnam war you couldn't make it to the bar. They even had bikini clad dancing Asian girls, dancing to tunes like "Push It Good", "Wishing Well", and "Rock Steady". I called it "Dragon Lady Music". One of the several bartenders was a pretty Chinese girl who was so funny. She had her own sets of lyrics to the dance songs and would sing them into your face. She was a total crack up all the time. To Rock Steady I remember some of her lyrics ("Everybody steady fuckinnnnnn" and to Push it Good she would sing out loud "Pussy good, pussy real good". The police were always raiding that place and, according to the owner Ming, they would shake it down for money from the cash register. I became friends with one of the girls and eventually had a 10+ year relationship with her. Se was separated from her American Vietnam vet husband and I would have married her if she'd been willing. She suffered quite a bit in Vietnam during the war. Every time I hear "Push It Good" it brings back a lot of memories.
