I don't often post in The Lounge, but this was kind of cool...

I went home to Cocoa Beach for thanksgiving, and ran into a couple of old friends. The bald guy you might recognize from the cover of this month's OUTSIDE magazine. The woman with him is Surfing Hall of Famer Christel Roever Saylor. Cocoa Beach High School cranked out some awesome surfers!

I was a subscriber for years, but they are just so male oriented (which is fine, that is their thing) that I stopped subscribing.

So many awesome women athletes out there too.

I still buy it occasionally.

Christel Roever Saylor is an insanely awesome surfer. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year. She actually found me at a street party in Cocoa Beach, then we ran into each other again later -- this pic is from a coffee shop/wine bar. Kelly was standing next to me, Christel was a few feet away, they were happy to pose for a pic. I went to school with Christel, Kelly went to school with my sister, but also used to do odd jobs at my beach-front office between rounds surfing. Nicest guy you could ever meet.

But yes, Outside Magazine is a testosterone-fest. I rarely buy it, but had to grab this one just because of the cover.

I surfed Co Co Beach last July 4th week with my wife and daughter. Not the pier, but just south there was a beach front park that was next to our rented condo.

Good times.

There is a great interview with Mike Tabeling, one of the founders of East Coast surfing, in the current Surfer Magazine. He tells how the shitty Florida surf made kids work that much harder, surf that much stronger. Many of the top surfers in the world come from Cocoa Beach. It is truly a "surf town." Kelly's brothers own surf shops and tackle shops in Cocoa Beach, and there are surf shops on every other block, not to mention the (in)famous Ron Jon Surf Shop. Kelly is about ten years my junior, but when we met up in the coffee shop it was like yesterday. Such a nice, grounded person, friendly as can be.
