You can walk all over Manhattan. Catch the subway or bus if the weather is awful. mnhtnbb Nov 2014 #25

I have spent plenty of time there, but I don't 'know' it well enough to give directions.

I have a map that I take with me. It's made by vanDam, and it is smaller than a paper back. When you open it, the sides pop out so it's easy to read. It also has Manhattan subway routes on it.

You could probably get it at the Port Authority, Penn or Grand Central Stations. It's $6.95.

edit to add - I know there are native NYCers here, so somebody with good info will help.

Enjoy!

so much for the reply. I tried google maps but was not sure if I could walk straight through greenly square via 33nd street to get to 1st ave or do I have to jog around and go down 6th ave.

I guess you will have to see the lay of the land when you get there. I don't think Greeley Square would be closed off, but you never know.

for the help. I may have to just spring for a cab, it's going to be chilly that day anyhow. I'm cheap but not stupid, most of the time.

Enjoy your day in NYC. Be sure to google to see if any museums are free or reduced price on the day you plan to go.
Pack yourself full at lunch to save meal $$. Little Italy or Junior's in Brooklyn are both good for this. People are friendly, contrary to popular belief. They are happy to help with directions. If you must consult a map, move to the side by the buildings to do so. Subways are clean and an economical way to get around.

is just a smallish block unto itself between 6th Ave. and Broadway. You can go through it (more north/south than east/west) or around it. There's a crosstown bus on 34th St. but sometimes you may have to wait a while for it due to traffic.

reply and the advice. I thought it may be faster to just walk instead of the bus, plus I did not want to pay for a cab both ways. I will see if I feel up to the walk and if the weather allows, but I'm glad you took the time to reply

You'll see the Empire State Building from different angles. Who knows what else you'll see.

I once saw a man walking down my block holding a cigarette and wearing a feathered shirt with no pants. He asked me for a light. I handed him my lighter, he lit his cigarette and handed it back. He said thanks and went on his way.

Walking five blocks crosstown in Manhattan is worth every step. If you get cold, just step into a deli on the way and get a cup of coffee.

so I'll try to walk to my dr. appointment, then take a cab to the train to go home. When I was younger my good friend and I used to hang around the city, ride the subways so I completely understand the strange sights one may see. I had a good time back then, but to tell you the truth, I'm more of a country boy at heart.

I know because I tried it once. The humongous masses of humanity rushing toward me and the towering buildings left me too dizzy and claustrophobic to find my way anywhere.

You're welcome

(Seriously, beats me. The Big Apple really is a place I tend to avoid...)

The MTA's website has a very good guide on which subways or buses you take from one destination to another (and will tell you something like 'walk 3 blocks').

As a guide I would go there and type in both addresses and see what they tell you.

"What if you were to walk the length of Manhattan in one day? Not cross-town, but the 12 (or so) miles from the northern tip of Washington Heights all the way to southernmost Battery Park? I set off to find out.

The planned route would begin in Inwood Hill Park and follow Broadway, passing the George Washington Bridge to join Riverside Drive. After continuing south through Harlem and the Upper West Side, we would navigate Midtown, the Garment District, the Flatiron District, NoHo, SoHo, NoLita, and finally the Financial District ending in Battery Park."

We routinely walk from the upper west side to Times Square and the theater district
when we're in town.

We've also walked from the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the upper east side
to midtown--around Carnegie Hall.

I've been known to walk from midtown through the jewelry district (47th Street) to Macy's at 34th
and back up 5th Ave.

You can walk as far as your feet and energy will hold out. Have a great time!
