"As Good as it gets" comes close, but I think it's a melodrama.

Next: This movie takes place almost entirely in the protagonist's mind, and ends with a lobotomy.

What most people don't know is that the Hitchcock thriller Vertigo was, in its original draft script, a modern adaptation of the Bierce short story. It was even titled in the first draft script as "From among the Dead, or There'll Never Be Another You, by Samuel Taylor and Ambrose Bierce".

Vertigo is a better title.

It was one in a trilogy of "sci-fi" books written by John Brunner- the others were Stand On Zanzibar and The Sheep Look Up.

In The Shockwave Rider he was the man who first predicted the widespread use of the internet, cell phones, and computer viruses, among a few other amazingly forward-thinking concepts.

Stand On Zanzibar is a highly predictive book that is very relevant to this time, including the concept of the mucker. The mucker is a frighteningly familiar concept that has emerged in the last few years- it's a person who snaps and begins randomly killing people, not stopping his rampage until he's killed by the police.

They're humbling books, well worth reading.

While the two stories are similar, Sidney Carton in Tale of Two Cities saved only one person from the guillotine, and Carton himself was quite disheveled. The hero in the story I'm thinking about pretended to be someone who was obsessed with his appearance, but made several undercover trips into France to rescue condemned people.
