What is the difference between a d-bag and a tool?

My wife and I are arguing about this, and we want DU's input.

We are more or less agreed that a tool doesn't realize he is a tool, while a d-bag doesn't care that he is a d-bag.

Is that the most salient difference, or are we missing something?
