Murder Holes
Murder holes are holes in the ceiling of a gateway or passageway arch in a fortification through which defenders could fire, or throw or pour harmful substances onto invaders. Rocks, arrows, scalding water, hot sand, quicklime, tar, and boiling oil were some of the materials used. These are the murder holes at Bodiam Castle.

Kind of wished you had combined this post with the other one since both are about the same castle. Although, I guess murder holes could be introduced to any abode ... even my simple lodgings
