doing a mother daughter hair date. cut and dye, or dye and cut?

i am so not a girlie girl and never was. i have worn my hair super short, maintenance free for most of my now long life. it is white now, and i actually love it like this. i get a lot of complements.

my daughters, not so much. girlie girls all 3 of them. my baby is currently in the nerdy blue and purple space. for her 21st, we are gonna get a dye job together.
my hair is easy- white.
all three have dark brown hair that is actually a deep auburn that is almost impossible to bleach. it goes carrot orange. i have tried to convince them all that they should go with it, and she is gonna give it a go.

which leaves me, ready to go purple, but now looking at doing the old bottle redhead thing. i have often made fun of that whole thing.
but my mom did it for ages, and i feel like now i can do a bit of an homage to my mom, and see if i am one of those people who can get away with that stuff.

been thinking about my celtic roots lately, and about the warrior queens in my genes. and the poets and the writers. the story tellers. but yeah boudica's daughter.
stuck with it.
might as well see if i can rock it.
it's gone in a month or 2 at the most if i dont like it.

.
.
.

but the question-

depends on how much you want taken off and how drastic the style change.

soak up color differently. Then when you get it cut, those darker/brighter ends get cut off. I have a problem in that my natural color is dark dark ash brown. Anytime I try anything close to maroon or an ash color -- even if it's ash blonde, the ends go black and the roots change to the appropriate color. Last time I had about an inch left of the darker color, which didn't look bad once cut. It even does it if they put some kind of protector on the ends. Weird! I've found going with the 'golden' browns instead has taken care of the black tip problem.

I love deep auburn/reds, but purple sounds awesome too!

a little about the girls' hair...

mine isn't even very dark...more like a dark dishwater blonde or light ashy brown.

When I try to bleach it, same thing.

Carrot Top.

anyway, I've been just about every color there is, except green.

Red looks good with my skin/eye color, but it's hard to maintain because of its molecular structure.

Since you keep your hair short, red will probably will not be a huge problem, as it can grow and be cut off quickly if it doesn't behave.

I would honestly try a henna rinse, as it adds shine to the hair.

good luck and have fun!

cant be done without chemical weapons.

if i decide to keep it for a while, that's not big either. its not a lot to touch up.

which, i gather, is a buzz with fringe. my back fringe went dread years ago, so it is a little row of dreads, some bangs, and a buzz. it was a sop to my mom, who always hated the buzz.

gonna grow it out a bit to try to match her sorta. hers is long now, but i think she needs a little pixie type thing. that's her.
