Holy Rood Day

It was the custom to go nutting on Holy Rood Day, September 14. This day commemorates the recovery of a large piece of the Holy Cross by the Emperor Heraclius after it had been plundered from Jerusalem by the King of Persia in 615.

Rood is an archaic word for pole, from Old English rōd "pole", specifically "cross", from Proto-Germanic *rodo, cognate to Old Saxon rōda, Old High German ruoda "rod".
