The True Terrible Tale of Mrs. Blunden of Basingstoke
While her husband was away, Mrs. Blunden fell ill. She sent to the pharmacist for poppy water. She drank it and fell into such a deep sleep, she was thought to be dead. The family decided to have her buried immediately due to the hot weather. Children playing near her burial site near the Church of the Holy Ghost reported noises coming from her grave. Their concerns were dismissed as childish fancy, until other children repeated these claims.
By the time she was exhumed it was too late. She was bloody and scratched and covered with self-inflicted wounds. She was judged to dead and her coffin resealed. She was reburied. A guard was placed at her grave as they awaited the return of the coroner, but he must have abandoned his post because when she was inspected later by the coroner, she had additional wounds and had torn off her shroud. She had bitten her mouth bloody in distress.
That is the story of the woman who was twice buried alive. The current location of her tomb is unknown.
