27-pound lobster caught off Rockland

http://bangordailynews.com/2012/02/22/news/midcoast/27-pound-lobster-caught-off-rockland/

snip

The beast weighed in at 27 pounds and measured nearly 40 inches long. It was dubbed Rocky because it was caught in the Rockland area, but Hayden-Rodriquez said it could have been named for Rocky the boxer because its claws are big enough to pack quite a punch.

The biggest lobster on record was caught off Nova Scotia and weighed more than 40 pounds.

Hayden-Rodriquez says Rocky will soon be released into the ocean because he will fare better in the wild.

there was a time when it was illegal to transport them back from the ocean. Each one is measured at the point of catch and if they were too small or large, back they go. If the Fish and Game caught you with oversize or undersized lobsters on your boat, you were in trouble.

No shit. There was a huge lobster caught about 10 years or so ago and they wanted to release it. Rush wanted to buy and eat it (which I'm sure he could do in one sitting) and hardly anyone complained. It was released. That one should be as well, but if a female lobster is in the vicinity she should be afraid!!!!!

On Edit: To be fair, I haven't eaten seafood (or any meat) in over 20 years. I don't approve of trapping creatures. We have hermit crabs. They all have their own personality and preferences and as someone with a degree in Philosophy, I consider that a sign that they think, and so they are. Just because they are crustaceans doesn't mean that they are ignorant. Tofu is ignorant, I'll grant that. Squids are one of the most intelligent non-mammal sea creatures. We are considered the "dominant" species and yet we are responsible for destroying the most of the other species. We should be the guardians, not the destroying entity. That's not a religious perspective, just a personal one.

It's only ignorant if it isn't sent to school and educated.

Or if it votes Republican.

And with it being that big, think of how old it is. Do you really want to eat a tough, old lobster?

A large-volume Italian restaurant should have one...the one in the photo has a 60-gallon capacity--more than enough for that lobster.

I think you'd have to make lobster bisque or something else like that.
