DISH TV’s Sleep Mode

Last edited Sat Apr 5, 2014, 03:56 PM - Edit history (1)

Mr. froggy and I recently switched from DIRECT TV to DISH TV, which is less costly and we get more channels.

We like DISH, and the only thing that was bugging us, until I found out how to fix it, was that after every hour of inactivity (like if we were watching a movie without adjusting the volume or something), the receiver automatically would go into Sleep Mode and shut off, and we’d have to grab the remote and turn it back on to continue watching whatever we were watching.

This morning I found out how to fix the problem:

On the remote, press Menu >8 >4 and either adjust the number of hours of inactivity before the receiver goes to sleep or disable Sleep Mode altogether.

Just thought I post this in case any other DISH users here are having a DISH TV Sleep Mode problem and are wondering how to fix it.

I started with Turner Vision(?) that became EchoStar or vice versa, then it turned into Dish. It's gone up from $500 to $700/yr for the couple of hundred channels -- you know, those hundreds that aren't watched but ONE or TWO are in the higher number of channels packages. The Billing people have been pretty bad over the years, sometimes couldn't even say what the subscription dates were. Recently one of them supposedly took a payment, but then nothing was credited (or billed on my card) and they were billing that the transaction never happened.

There was a profile of the owner a few years ago, that he's sort of an Ahhhnuld type (from Austria) who has this image of being a hail-fellow-well-met but deals authoritarianly with the employees, something about how he donated to Hillary but then was supporting the Rethugs. I used to take comfort that Dish was the anti- DirecTV, which was a Rupert MURDOCH property, but who knows who's in bed anymore.

That said, there's never been any real problem with the signal or receiver. Oh, but back on the topic, sometimes when I've fallen asleep and left the receiver on all night, it has to reload the signal, is that how to say it? The screen Menu plus channels have to be downloaded again, like everything timed-out or something.

but kept losing the satellite signal, even on clear, sunny days. Our local DISH dealer kept telling us our receiver was worn out and we needed to buy a new one. We bought three in that five-year period. Then we switched to DIRECT and had no problems, but they kept jacking up their prices, so about six weeks ago, dealing directly with DISH instead of going through the local dealer, we switched back to DISH.

Even after our six-month special introductory offer expires and we’re paying regular price, we’ll still be paying less with DISH than we ever did with DIRECT. Mr. froggy said that if we get screwed around by DISH again, we should think about getting a roof antenna and being satisfied with watching our area channels, Scottsbluff, NE and Rapid City, SD. But what would I do without The Artful Detective (Ovation – OVTN) and Cold Justice (TNT) when the new season starts toward the end of June? I hope DISH works out for us this go-around. I guess we’ll be finding out. The world is festering with crooks.

If you go to Menu>8>4 on your remote, besides adjusting the Sleep Mode, you can also set the time for daily updates. I don’t know if that could be what is causing your signal-reload situation, but I think it might be. I have my daily updates set for 3 a.m.
