2. And out comes the old chestnut...

Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Joyce Kilmer

10. Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

Beautiful grove of ENORMOUS Yellow Poplars in North Carolina near the Tennessee border on the south side of the Smoky Mountains.

If you're ever in the vicinity, it's worth a visit (and there's a plaque with Mr. Kilmer's famous poem).

18. Oh how pretty.

You can, I guess, take the MidWest out of a girl, because after 20 years in California, I am acclimated. I know I couldn't cope with the cold, or with having to dig the car out.

But there are things about the colder parts of the nation still dreamt of inside my heart: like the part about icicles in the sun and magical trees covered by snow.

I really envy people who can see things like this.

56. Can I come and stay with you?

I'd build an igloo, and sleep in it, and during the day we can build snow forts and have snowball fights.

I am a bit shocked to see you live in southern state North Carolina, and yet you are having all this snow? This is clearly not the weather pattern we grew up thinking of as being "normal." (Of course, maybe you are in the foothills, and this is normal?)

57. No, this is not normal.

Ice storms are as common or more common than snowfall. Every few years or so. Some years, no real winter precipitation at all, but this winter very weird.

59. I'll do you one better than letting you visit

and sleep in an igloo. I'll trade houses with you in the winter----you can have all this cold and snow. We always have snow here in PA, but not this much and it usually is not this cold. You can have it.

7. That third 'tree' is actually a huge blooming wisteria vine in Japan

I initially thought it was the world's largest wisteria vine, located in Sierra Madre, California that Huell Howser hipped me to; it's not.

20. Algorhyme

I think that I shall never see
A graph more lovely than a tree.

A tree whose crucial property
Is loop-free connectivity.

A tree that must be sure to span
So packets can reach every LAN.

First, the root must be selected.
By ID, it is elected.

Least-cost paths from root are traced.
In the tree, these paths are placed.

A mesh is made by folks like me,
Then bridges find a spanning tree.

In SANTA BARBARA which is a lovely old tree, at one of the parks downtown. Of course, nothing beats the Redwood and Sequoia trees of Northern California.

38. old growth trees and glacial terminal moraine

Help us SaveMaresa.org to save 300 to 400 yr old native american trees. Jesuits sold 15 acres that contain hundreds of old growth trees and the last remnant of the glacial terminal moraine. They intend to sell it to a developer for housing. This property has been undisturbed and is still in pristine condition. We need your support. It should be preserved for the future generations to see what old growth trees looks like and to see the power of a Glacier to move the land and deposit rocks.
