(8,492 posts)I was thinking "Roomba" and was curious why the washing machine wasn't good enough.
Edit to add: If you replace "Roomba" throughout the comments in this thread it's a lot more fun. I'd be careful doing it in the water, however.
Well there is the 'Scooba' that would work in water.

(20,043 posts)I've only done it three times. But it is fun. I feel like I've gotten a good cardio workout when I'm done. It's even more fun when you do it with someone.

(95,337 posts)I'm thinking of taking classes there.
If not - let me know where you are going for Zumba. I'm thinking of starting it a few days a week.

(20,043 posts)I'm not brave enough (yet) to do it in public...I do it at home. I ordered the dvds. I would eventually like to go to a class. My daughter wants to be an instructor. She comes and does it with me on the weekend.
It's fun...

(32,078 posts)No need to worry about it. If the classes nearby you are anything like the ones I attend, you'll find people of all shapes, sizes, and skills there. Nobody cares what you look like doing it. It's way more fun to do it with a group, too. The videos will get old after a while. With the classes, there's always fresh music and choreography. And, variations among instructors. Plus, when the new stuff comes up, nobody gets it right away.
As for your daughter, I hope she goes for it! If she likes it that much, she'll likely make a great instructor.

(20,043 posts)near. Once I have the basics down and have the stamina I plan to go. My sister and a few others want to go too. My son's girlfriend is gonna start coming over and doing it with me and then she'll go to classes with me as well.
Doing it at home is only temporary...I want to go and do it with a group.
How long have you been doing it?
GoCubsGo
(32,078 posts)I do it a couple of times a week. The other days, I take spinning classes, except on Sunday, when I swim. They just started AquaZumba in December. I do that once a week.
I'm glad to hear you are going to try classes. I really think you'll like those better than doing it at home.

(20,043 posts)she's certified or whatever you need to be. I couldn't get into that.
I quit smoking 9-2010 and gained weight when I quit, so now I'm trying to get it off.
My husband is Hispanic, so I've had some pointers from the women in his family (all good dancers). I really am looking forward to go to classes, especially since I will have friends and family with me.
I also hula hoop--don't laugh there's a lot you can do with one, I had no idea. I use a weighted one, it's pretty cool. It's also good to do if you have back problems.
I don't like transitional exercise so Zumba and hooping work out well for me. I also do the treadmill and very light weight training with my son.

(32,078 posts)I'm headed to class soon. It's not quite the same as regular Zumba, but still pretty fun. I don't find it to be the best cardiovascular work-out, but I do get a pretty good upper body work-out. And, it's more fun that swimming laps.
I like regular Zumba, too. With all that hip jiggling, I haven't had lower back pains since I started doing it.

(20,043 posts)see that it was available. They also have classes for those not as young as some, which I think is cool. Yes, it's a lot of hip jiggling, I can feel the burn in my tummy with a lot of the moves.
I'm still learning the routines so I kinda feel like a dork right now...LOL.
GoCubsGo
(32,078 posts)The trick is to not care that you're a dork. I am far from being another J-Lo, and I don't care!
BTW, the classes for older people are great, but in the regular classes, the instructors usually will show you different "levels" and tell you, "If doing this hurts X, Y, or Z, don't do it. Do something else. Just keep moving." At least that's how it is at my gym. I get the impression that Zumba instructors, in general, are pretty laid back.

(20,043 posts)YET...I do it at home for now.
GOCubsGO recommends the classes.
Even doing it at home I have a lot of fun. And it works the hell out of me too.

(32,078 posts)I don't know how much of that is the Zumba instructors not teaching routines that are intense enough, or the fact that I tend to work much harder in spinning because it is lower impact. I get pretty sweaty in Zumba, too, but I'm a heavy sweater, in general. I just find it easier to get my heart rate up in spinning. But, spinning doesn't give a full-body workout like Zumba does. That's why I do both.
