The first time I saw the Rocky Mountains by flying over them, my jaw dropped. This planet is freaking amazing.

But the most amazing sight was when I was coming back from Mexico and flew over a rainbow. I wanted to break into the song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow."

because she made one one day that, for some reason that is still unexplained, towered above every other apple pie she had ever made before. I had probably just seen a PBS story on Mt Fuji and came in the kitchen and remarked that her new pie was the Mt Fuji of apple pies. We all laughed so much that we insisted every apple pie from then on had to be made Fuji style and she did just that.

Man I miss her and her pies. Thanks for the good memory!

but I really don't remember what apples she used. All I know for sure is that was one mountainous apple pie. That would be funny though...if she used Fuji apples and purposely made a mountain of a pie and then I came in and noticed it and picked the exact same mountain...(Why didn't I call it Everest? St Helens? I knew of those mountains too. But I picked Fuji. The shapes were similar - I know I remember that...I must have seen something on PBS or some other educational show...)

She made a heckuvva pecan pie too.

but still way impressive when landing in Portland.
Several of those stick above the clouds.
Rainier, Adams, St Helens, Hood, Jefferson are all visible above cloud layers while descending from cruise altitude.
The east to west landing pattern has the plane lower than the peak of Hood. Visible out the port/left windows.
Down through the clouds to PDX touchdown.

I love, Hood, too, but I see it all the time 'cuz I live in Portland, so when I get to see the sheer mass of Rainier it takes my breath away. I recently saw it with a ring of clouds around its base, with the top sticking up into pure sunshine. So beautiful.
