The spinning top provides a visual to assist you with thinking about what you are teaching. The continuous motion of the top helps to explain the complexities and diversities that learners bring to the classroom, along with the responsibilities that the instructor has in delivering this curriculum. At the core, and in control of the top’s motion, are the learner and the chosen theme. As the learner spins through her purpose for coming back to school, she begins to articulate her goals. Her ability to communicate her ambitions and dreams allow her to see a purpose. Her purpose motivates and directs her learning as she engages in sharing and talking, problem solving, and life-long learning.

Theme units are ways of integrating the diversity of knowledge and experience that learners bring with them. The units represent a way of thinking and directing what an instructor teaches. Instructors should select themes, preferably with direct learner input, derived from learners’ personal, work, or community contexts. Themes identified will represent all avenues of the learners’ lives and can potentially correspond to a variety of social, cultural, political, and economic issues that learners experience. There is no end to the possibilities that can emerge. Getting a job, family responsibilities, abusive relationships, childcare, and dealing with government agencies are just a few examples of themes that could be generated by adult learners.

I like it
