Trouble sleeping last night-- was half in & half out when I saw this weird thing on TV:

I don't know what the movie was but after seeing this, this, nightmarish guitar-y thing I had to track down the video using a bit of the dialog just to make sure it wasn't my imagination.
(you can jump to 40 seconds in to get to the real beginning of it)

Holy freaking fuck. This must have been our secret weapon to end WWII. The Axis knew we were days away from sending in armies of "Stringies"

1. Alvino Rey ... Father of the pedal steel guitar ...

And grandfather of Win and Will Butler, the brothers who form the backbone of Arcade Fire ...

It is said that the passing of Alvino was part of the inspiration that led to the production of Funeral, Arcade Fire's first album ... and the rest is history ...

What I find fascinating about this clip? ... The vocoder like treatment of the vocals ... Alvin was WAY ahead of his time .... thanks for posting ...

4. Remember Peter Frampton and "DoYou Feel Like We Do?" This is an early version of that.

2. Not only was it weird, but racist

They couldn't have an actual black person in their orchestra, so they invented "stringie"?

6. I'm not sure I'm picking up the racism. But maybe I just can't navigate past the extreme freakiness.
