DU Album of the Day: The Black Crowes - The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion

I'll have to confess, I never thought much of the Black Crowes until the album. After hearing it I found this amazingly soulful band with the heart of a blues band mixed with modern rock & roll. It is said that die-hard BC fans actually don't like this album very much whereas the casual BC fans love it. I guess I must be a casual fan because I just adore this album.

Probably because of "Thorn in my Pride" was this album so popular across a wide variety of people. It was just a soulful, heartwrenching anthem of pain & love that just draws you in from the first notes of the song.

But my favorite song from the album is "Sometimes Salvation" because in the end we all need a bit of salvation.

I got to see the Black Crowes in concert a few years back. Oddly enough we got the tickets because we wanted to see the opening act - Son Volt. But we stayed for the Black Crowes. Lead Singer Chris Robinson is quite the lead singer who pours his heart and emotions out for every song that he sings.

because they were the opening act for Robert Plant. (That's two you've picked now - Cheap Trick and TBC).

I like 'em well enough but not well enough to know which albums I'm "supposed" to like (lol)

I had tickets to see them perform with Jimmy Page but that was the tour that Jimmy hurt his back half way through so my date never materialized. I did get the live album they did though and it is a really nice record if you don't already have it. They do a good job on Jimmy's stuff and he's great as always.

Live at the Greek is a good album.

I don't have your AOTD but I will fire up the singles I have here and the ZoCrowes album and get a little lost in some rock and roll.

Back when they first released the album you could actually pick the songs you wanted on the CD. I got mine only with LZ songs (there were some BC songs performed too).

I may not fit the "die hard" group, but I would say I'm more than a casual fan, and I think SHMC is easily their best effort. For me, "No Speak No Slave" is the best song on the record.

Here's a live version. The sound isn't great, but the rendition is smoking.
