(66,307 posts)less relevant in context. The meaning of 'protest' in this instance is, "to proclaim". As in: "I protest my innocence." One is not denying one's innocence, but proclaiming it. Same thing.
One thing I love about Shakespeare; there are as many textual layers as an onion...
