The best thing about French Toast...

when you have some of the cinnamon/vanilla egg mixture left over, and toss it in the pan and cook it up like scrambled eggs...

1. eww

not me. I need eggs to be completely savory - salt, onions, cheese, salsa - any of that kind of stuff is fine.

the only french toast I could ever stand was from Bobs Big Boy - I think they battered and deep fried that shit, it was pretty good. I have texture issues and soggy bread is one thing that just makes me shudder.

3. Oh man..

We've been getting this "Texas Toast" bread from Franz... makes the best French Toast ever. (Well, except for the orange infused one we had at a B&B in Port Townsend years ago... they used a french baguette, and must have had orange juice or at least zest in the batter.. topped with a little powdered sugar.. heavenly)

7. Yum! I might add another egg to the mix first.

Sounds better than giving it to the dog.

10. Usually, I mix the crumbs that are left from the bread into ...

... the remaining egg for what I call "bread brei". It's better than it sounds, really.

11. Is made with Jack Spratt sprouted wheat bread

from the Clinton Bakery in Utah. Yummy.

I cannot use an entire loaf so often end up tossing the last third. My sis tuned me into making french toast. Thanks DU member freckleface.

17. We used to be able to buy it in

Jackson Hole. I am sure it came frozen. Whenever I travel across country to my home in North Carolina I take loaves with me.

PM me with your address & I will send you a loaf. I often send it to my twin in Vancouver.

12. Instead of vanilla...I use pure Maple Syrup...

it's wonderful when you cook the leftover mixture. My kids used to fight over it!

So the syrup incorporates into the eggs ok despite the consistency of it?

15. Yes...Maple syrup is not quite as thick as 'pancake' syrup

I add a dash of nutmeg as well... The one thing you want to watch is that because of the maple syrup you can't allow the pan to become too hot, either for the french toast or the leftovers! My mother used to mix it up with a fork...I use a whisk...it all blends nicely.

18. I love it! You're welcome....

if you have to cook for a more than 2 , you might want to pick up some maple flavoring and add a drop of that to your mixture...
