I did some hiking today (pics)

These are the coastline of Portuguese Bend, Palos Verdes Peninsula, California

I took these with my crappy cellphone - I' not sure why the last four ones downsized.

Catalina Island

I then hiked 3 and a half miles in the dark back to the top of Crenshaw Blvd.

1. Very nice, my dear ellisonz!

It's a rocky terrain; you're very brave, or foolhardy, or something!

The pictures look beautiful.

3. Well there are signs warning you proceed onto Inspiration Point

Knowing that it's prone to landslides and at your own risk. I don't stand on the very edge...so not that brave as tempting as it is at certain moments.

I really like their "Dangerous Conditions: Don't Even Think About It" signs at Portuguese Point and elsewhere.

2. Wow! These are spectacular!

A couple of them look like the Cliffs of Moher, so I had to check and see where they were taken! You're a great photographer, and you had some beautiful countryside!

4. I'm going to invest in my own quality camera some day

I find that more than half the challenge of photography is getting to the right place at the right time.

5. I've told myself that, too, since it's tough with my phone camera.

In that second before it clicks, anything can change. Usually the dog walks out of the room...

6. Dogs are photography resistant

That's why people pay big bucks for those underwater dog photos

7. My dogs recognize the camera and make a point of turning their heads

I have one that I posted on a funny thread here that's just of Charlie's moving legs.

18. your photos are beautiful

a good camera is important but an eye for the 'picture' is just as important and so correct that being in the right place at the right time is priceless...

13. Thank you for the beautiful photos

Lots of gorgeous places in our country but none more so than the southern California coast and Catalina. Hope you get the camera you want. I have to settle for the Ocean Conservancy and PBS NOVA wonderful series most of the time. Hope we can work together to save our oceans for our grandchildren.

19. Nice clear view of Catalina

not much haze in the air.

Is Portuguese Bend still sinking?

Back when I lived in LA, I would always take visitors on a drive around Palos Verdes as part of the tour. Very scenic, though often hazy.

I lived not that far from the other end of Crenshaw Boulevard.

20. Portuguese Bend is still sinking/sliding into the ocean

And now they're talking about building homes in the area again: http://www.dailybreeze.com/ci_21662361/report-homes-could-be-built-rancho-palos-verdes?IADID=Search-www.dailybreeze.com-www.dailybreeze.com

It's been especially windy as of late.

22. No true Californian ....

will live anywhere where the land doesn't move, the trees don't burn, and has air that you can't see.

21. Great photos

There is little an expensive camera can do that your iPhone camera can't.

You figured it out. It is mostly about knowing where to be and when to be there.

I have a couple of thousand $$ in cameras and lenses. Most of my best photos came from the iPhone. There is a place for my expensive stuff but it is not necessary for great photos.

Get the Zite app and check the iPhone blogs.

It's times like this I really miss living in California and hiking without risking my life on a snow/ ice covered trail.

25. Thanks for bringing the ocean home, ellis.

Love it, figure it 's the one thing man can't civilize, it will always be wild.

Ocean conservancy is #1 to me, cuz they know we can't see what they're doing underneath it all.

Thanks for both the earworm and the jolt of homesickness. Nice pics.
