DU3 Album of the Day: "Some Girls" The Rolling Stones

"Because we couldn't remember their fuckin' names" was the apocryphal retort of Mick Jagger when one rock journalist asked one too many insipid questions: Why did you call the album "Some Girls"?

Reissued a couple of months ago with some extra outtakes and alternative tracks, this is an album that can be proffered without comment to folks who claim that no good music came out of the 1970s. The album cover had to be re-worked from its original form because the record company hadn't gotten permission to use the photos of all the women on it. Instead of putting in new photos, the company just substituted color layovers for the bi-level cover (reminding us once again of one of the advantages of the LP over the CD or downloading individual songs - music was, once upon a time, a tactile experience too).

The songs are an impressive array of different influences, showing the Stones at some of their creative best, whether it's blues (Miss You and Beast of Burden), straight-ahead rock (Respectable), or even country-western (Far Away Eyes). There's even a nod or two to the emerging punk scene (Shattered) but with the indelible mark of the Rolling Stones. A keeper for any time.

1. "Miss You"
2. "When the Whip Comes Down"
3. "Imagination" (Norman Whitfield/Barrett Strong)
4. "Some Girls"
5. "Lies"
6. "Far Away Eyes"
7. "Respectable"
8. "Before They Make Me Run"
9. "Beast of Burden"
10. "Shattered"

I only have a greatest hits collection here at work. I have the album at home but haven't converted it to my music server here yet....will have to make some liberal substitutions in lieu of the non-greatest hit tracks...

The outtake album is great. If you didn't recognize Jagger's voice you might think it was an alt-country group. Some great cuts, and the original cuts were always some of my favorites.

I decided to post about "Some Girls" last night when I heard "Emotional Rescue" on the radio, thinking that the song was from that album. I do remember my brother telling me about being out at a bar with some buddies when "Emotional Rescue" was released, and that being the only song on the jukebox that could conceivably be thought of as a rock song (everything else was late 70s-early 80s country music crap). It was Dimer Night (glass of beer for a dime, those were far different times), and he and his pals punched the song up about 60 times in a row.

And Beast of Burden especially is one of their all time great songs. (IMO of course)

To rave reviews. The original music video is hilarious. But I couldn't find the original with good sound so I posted a fan made video with excellent sound.
