OED says of the ancient rites that they were "celebrated with extravagant dancing, singing, drinking, etc.," which gives "etc." quite a workout.

7. My favorite bar ever was a rural place in Pennsylvania (about 25 mi WNW of Philly)...

... and a friend of mine arranged for the small company he worked for
to throw their annual picnic there. It got rained out halfway through
the afternoon. Almost everyone left. My friend and a few co-workers
came into the bar (honest, it was a rare weekend DAY that found me
in a bar).

The bar owner came out and said the only thing he couldn't just put
aside for something else later were the 500 clams he had just already
steamed.

A couple of the coworkers, together with a couple of us barflies,
literally rolled up our sleeves and attacked the BINS of clams he
brought out. We finished them.

That began what became an annual event that grew every year --
dozens of people getting together at someone's house for the entire
weekend and going through THOUSANDS of clams (as well as kegs
and kegs and kegs and kegs of beer and various "sundries&quot --
steamers on Friday night and HUGE stockpots of red AND white clam
chowder on Saturday night.

They were known as the 2nd (4th, 6th, etc.) Annual Clam Orgies.

That first unplanned "orgy", I lost count at 70 clams... and ordering a
dozen clams in a restaurant -- even now, 20+ years later -- seems...
well, it seems downright anticlimactic.

where lobsters were actually the first main course that everyone focused on ... I went for the clams as well. It was the only time in my life that there were more clams than I could actually eat. It was wonderful ... I lost count.
