So I watched this Max Lucado film with friends last night...

..."The Christmas Child," which starred Christian singer/songwriter/guitarist Steven Curtis Chapman.

And I find out that I've settled into a niche where this kind of film doesn't resonate with me. I've been watching a lot of action films with bad acting, classic horror films, mob classics like the Godfather films, Goodfellas, Casino...

...I sit down for an hour and a half in front of a movie like this and all I see is the bad acting, the "all too convenient" developments in the plot (one of my friends who hadn't seen the film yelled out about ten "I bet she / he is going to..." moments and she was RIGHT every time).

It has an average 4 star rating on Amazon. One reviewer gave it 3 stars and said "it was really slow moving lacking substance and content." I agree...but I would have given it 2 stars. It's just a film that tries to tug at your heartstrings repeatedly over the course of 90 minutes and ultimately fails because it tries too hard and lacks a tight, realistic script and superb acting.

I was the only person in the room who felt this way and I kept my opinions to myself, silently smiling and nodding while everyone else commented on what a great movie it was.

In 2012, I think I need to seek out a new posse.

Tonight I'm going to watch this for the gazillionth time:

Just because you're a Christian, it doesn't mean you have to be square.

I'm a Christian too, but that film was like a glass of warm ginger ale that had been left out on the kitchen counter all night.
