Help. Don't know where to put this auto sale question.

Is it illegal to sell a car without a title?

I have some neighbors that are absolutely experts at playing the system. They haven't worked in years. They are just so good at working the system that they get by - barely.

Anyway they got a used car somehow. They needed money so they borrowed from one of those car title places.

Then husband and wife started fighting. He moved out. He was supposed to pay the car loan but he didn't. I guess he used the money for something else. Loan company has the title.

Car broke down. Expensive to fix and they never even have $5 for gas. So she just sold the car to someone who doesn't care if there is a title.

It's gone. She got paid. I don't think the loan company got paid.

I didn't think you could sell a car without transferring the title.

So what happens to her when the loan company comes after her?

The car is gone - probably chopped up by now.

They don't own anything. They rent the house. Don't work.

But they do get some kind of govt. assistance. I know they get food stamps. Don't know about disability.

I'm not sure if it's illegal per se although I don't see how they are ever going to get a legal tag for it. If the loan company ever finds it they can reposes leaving whomever bought it at a loss with virtually no legal recourse.
