Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Thu Dec 13, 2012, 11:11 PM

I stood for a full minute today.

Not bad for someone who has been in a wheelchair for over a year!

Of course, I was grabbing onto some parallel bars at the time, but it's a start....

10. I'm the victim of an especially nasty form of arthritis

I was doing fine on a medication called Remicade- it kept me going for eight years. Then one day I had a reaction to it and the doctor took me off it, and as soon as it cleared my system it all went to hell. I got weaker and weaker until finally my calf muscles degenerated so badly I couldn't walk any more. My entire body kinda collapsed in on itself.

Then a couple months ago I got a different doctor who put me back onto the Remicade and I instantly began feeling better. I've been working out three times a week with weights for about three months, and I'm now beginning to get a bit of my muscle mass back, and the pain is no longer as intense as it has been for the past few months.

Looks like I may have a chance to walk again.

13. Thanks for the update!

I'm speechless the doc took you off a very effective med for your condition. ...

I know how physical conditions can spiral into major problems in no time without the right drugs (severe asthma here).

I am so glad to hear of your progress. Keep up the good fight (walk - heh!)

52. This is wonderful news!

I don't know what kind of arthritis you are talking about but I am one very lucky RA person, my RA is very mild. Still hurts like a son of a gun when flared but the damage is tiny after all these years.

You hang in there and never give up. This is fantastic news. I have heard so many good stories about the TNF-Alpha inhibitors. This is the best

72. YEA! Have you had the IV Laser treatments at all? My dog was mostly lame

and x-rays showed severe deterioration in her spine due to arthritis and a bad hip as well as two bad back legs. She now walks and runs. I guess they use it on humans also. It can treat a variety of conditions.

There was a few months last year I couldn't stand for very long due to horrible
sacroiliac joint pain.
I'm much better now, but being in bed for about 4 months gave me a new perspective.
Luckily I have a good doctor and some good prayer.

Congratulations, because I know how good it feels to be up!

21. That is great news.

You have a lot of hard work ahead of you. Now you have to take a step and then more and more. I am so glad you found a doctor who is able to help you. Soon you will be walking like a pro. Please let us all know how you are doing with the therapy. Once you get to walking, if there is a therapeutic horseback riding center near you it would be very beneficial. The horse's steps mimics a persons stride and helps the muscles to remember how to walk.

31. How fantastic!

I can totally relate to your progress as I watch my 91-year old father hanging in there with a nasty neurological genetic condition called Marie Charcoth Tooth syndrome. Basically, it's a foot-flop and ankles and calf muscles become increasingly weakened. But every day he straps on his leg braces and cruises around a long hallway, using a 4-wheel walker.

I bet you're much younger than he is, and pretty soon you'll need that same 4-wheel walker. They come with seats attached, too.

You must feel heavenly - quite an accomplishment. Please keep us updated on your future progress...we're all rooting for you.

37. WOOHOO!!!!!

.
.
.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! I bet you were sweating and in pain following that -- but grinning
your head off.
.
.
THAT was an accomplishment to be very proud of.
.
.
.
Aren't rehab therapists some of the nicest, most positive people on thie earth?
.
.
I know your feeling to a lesser extent. I spent 7 months in a full-leg cast -- 6 of them
with absolutely NO bone growth whatsoever. I didn't think I would EVER walk unassisted
again.
.
One month later, it had healed and I was out of the cast. SIX months after that, I got
the go-ahead fron my doctor to go water-skiing. While rising up from the water, I was
CONVINCED that the pressure was just going to snap my leg again.
.
When I got up and started skimming over the water, I KNEW what flying -- soaring over
the clouds was.
.
.
.
Again, congratulations. And keep working at it. It can be excruciating, but the eventual
rewards, even something like walking from the kitchen table to the sink, can be ecstatic!!!
.
.
.

While I was in rehab after my knee replacements a woman who had been in a wheelchair for months following an accident stood for the first time. She was ecstatic. Then while I in physical therapy a partially paralyzed woman stood for the first time since breaking her neck. She glowed with happiness.

You must have been grinning from ear to ear.

75. The Tao of Fractals blog made you stand up in my landscape!!! You've been standing there over 3yrs!

Dear Prisoner Six,
I joined this site so that I could let you know that your blog really heartened me. This internet business is so SUPER for letting us hear what others are thinking and creating, even and especially those not in our geographical area.

I study philosophy, the mind, consciousness, health and have at the same time been an ecologist all my life. I only knew when I started reading about high velocity physics, Chaos and string theory alongside my studies of formal logic that the general domain I was jumping around in intellectually was complex systems. (Gregory Bateson comes to mind, along with Henri Laborit)

I had been doing some training on a professional course which got the mind and body synchronised this weekend. I woke up with thoughts and images which became a project in my mind. I am going to propose this project to an artist or even as a larger collaboration in the form of a competition for artists with funding and a prize etc. The unifying theme that came to my mind was the "Tao of Fractals". I spelled it out in the new language I am studying and lept out of bed.

Out of respect for others' artistry and creativity I googled exactly that phrase between quotes and ONLY your blog page came up.
So, here I am, saying thank you for having had the idea, as well as for, POSTING it so that I could find and hear you think along those lines. I will happily reference your earlier coining of the phrase if you would be pleased to be mentioned.

I have downloaded your images just for the fun of it. I am sure I will make them them opening pages to some thing I put together.
Thank you again, Lady filosopher
congratulations on all your new steps
