I have a bank-related question someone here might know the answer to

My parents sent my family a check for Christmas, which was very kind. They accidentally wrote it out to my first name and my husband's first name, but then with my former last name (their last name) instead of my married name (my husband's name.)

I don't want to have to contact my parents and ask them to send another check - it was really nice of them to get us anything. I'd rather be able to work it out with the bank. My former last name is my legal middle name and is on my driver's licence as that. I've been married for 15 years, so this isn't a name the bank will have in my records I don't think. Do you think the bank is likely to cash this check? Am I going to have to bug my parents?

I thought we might very well have someone here who works in a bank and might know or at least have an idea.

Thank you

1. I would think if it is a local bank then should not be a problem however

if it is a national bank then they will charge you no more than your first born

3. Endorse the check twice

Once with the wrong old name and then with your correct name.

4. If you have the ability to just deposit it, it will not be a problem.

If you deposit it, just endorse it as it is made out and it will be accepted by your bank as valid commercial paper and then sent to their bank for payment. Assuming it does not bounce for lack of funds, it will never be a problem. If it bounces, your bank will deduct the amount from your account. IF you need the cash immediately, I am not sure. But if you can wait whatever your bank's time rules are for out of state checks, just deposit it and take the cash out once the bank credits it to the account.

5. hell just put your account number on the back, no need to even sign I swear

I have run a lot of odd checks into my account through the ATM. I don't know if a human being even looks at them anymore

Of course if you need the cash right away it doesn't matter how well it was filled out or how much it is or who it is from, they will need to hold it just long enough to fuck you over.

6. Be sure to add the words 'For Deposit Only' along with the account number.

Then deposit the check. Shouldn't be a problem.

7. Thanks, everyone

We'll just deposit it. We don't know what to do with it yet.
