Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Name a product you weren't sure would work when you bought it, now can't live without.

For me, it's my two Shark steam cleaners, the mop and the portable general purpose steamer. Absolutely love them, pressurized steam really cuts through dirt. Cleaning the kitchen right now, they make it much faster and easier.

I was dubious when I bought the mop, but after seeing how well it worked I bought the other steamer.

You?

1. Whirly pop stainless steel pop corn popper for home coffee roasting, back in 2007

Last edited Sat Nov 24, 2012, 12:45 PM - Edit history (1)

I've used that same 30.00 item weekly since then - and we are so hooked on our home roast that most other coffee we drink (when out, travelling, etc) tastes substandard!

And of course, the French Press. We even travel with ours!

2. That's clever to repurpose it for a different use.

I did that a few years ago, I grew a lot of different grains, including flint and dent corns, to grind my own flours.

Looked at grain mills, very expensive. So, I tried a Black and Decker coffee grinder that was on sale at Target for $15. Works great, even of flint corns, grind is adjustable and can grind very fine flour, takes 1 to 2 minutes to grind a cup depending on hardness of the grain.

10. all credit goes to Sweet Maria green coffee bean supplier -

they sell so many different types of home roasting equipment - the Whirley Pop is one of their many ideas.

I sit on my front porch with the coleman stove and popper - takes 8 minutes to roast up to 12 oz green beans. Current favorites are Kenya, Ethiopia, Guatamala beans.

4. Dual zone climate control

in the car. I never knew how much I appreciated being able to set the temperature for my side of the car and never had to play with the knob until I rented a car last summer and spent too much time turning the A/C up and down to try to get comfortable.

In reality it's an extravagance that I could live without but I do enjoy it.

5. toilet paper

I had some serious doubts that such a flimsy thing would do the job as advertised but I'm now sold and won't go without.

6. Soda Stream

Turns tap water into sparkling water.

http://www.sodastreamusa.com/

I have been using mine daily for about 7 years. Don't bother with the flavored mixes. Just make straight fizzy water for drinking, over ice with lime, or a quick highball with brandy and soda. The refills are available at many grocery stores and hardware stores.

Plus...you get long, satisfactory burps if you gulp it down.

12. Amen. I am a Soda Stream FOOL.

Best thing for a reasonable food program ever. I don't even use the flavors. I splash a little cranberry juice, squeeze a little lemon, and I'm in heaven. I also discovered that if you buy a good strong ginger beer about a quarter cup in a big glass of soda water is delicious.

We went for the glass bottles too. I'v enever been a huge soda drinker because I don't have the world's biggest sweet tooth, but still I think we save a bundle on sparkling water.

JUST BUY IT.

15. Only use distilled water in that Shark. I used tap water, and

even though I have a water softener, the damn thing clogged, steam built up, and the mophead went sailing across the floor with a rush of steam and water. I miss my steam mop, but I don't trust it enough to buy another--got a Hoover Floormate now.

16. Page layout software

When I bought my first page layout software in 1988, I wasn't sure what I would do with it and no one in the unit could believe I would pay half a month's salary for one program. Now it's what pays the bills.

17. IPhone, without a doubt!

In 2008, I had a regular flip up cell phone, a Palm Pilot for e-books and blogging, and I had an IPod for mp3 tunes. I was Leary of getting a gadget that combined all three of my favorite toys, especially if I lost it, my whole life would be down the drain. But I bit the bullet and went for it--never looked back. Now I have the IPad and Bluetooth keyboard for faster blogging that's compatible with the phone.

Along with my coffee mug, the IPhone is seriously an extension of my right arm.
