Question for business owners

The business owner's group appears all but dormant, so I thought I'd ask my question here. I tried googling for info, but I can't quite get the phraseology right and don't get the hits I'm looking for.

This is a question for business owners who sell products, not services.

I'm interested in your thoughts on an any-time return policy, such as the one from L.L. Bean. Essentially, you can return any product any time, even if you've worn it out from use. I suppose the expectation is that people would not take advantage, and I suppose if you're a multi-million dollar company you can afford to absorb the losses from people who do take advantage. But smaller businesses can't do that, and, in some cases, small businesses are in fact competing, to a degree with larger businesses, and this can put the Davids at a distinct disadvantage from the Goliaths. In any case, I'm interested in retail businesses who have used this policy or have had to deal with competitors who do.

1. they make it up in shipping/handling charges

I just spent the last month ordering a 10 cent plastic part for my dishwasher. between silly price ($4.50 plus 6 shipping!) the wrong part, the defective one and finally getting an intact, correct one I spent well over whatever they spent for the material or wholesale and actual shipping. they and fedex made out well on a stupid plastic clip I couldn't quite make out of baling wire.

yes they have a return at anytime policy

2. I returned two shirts to L.L. Beane...

They were Christmas presents from my daughter.
One was too small (not the size she ordered) and the collar button and cotton backing ripped out of the other one on the first wash.

I got the return info online and sent them back with an explanation.
Used their pre-printed mailing label, etc.
They claimed they never got them.
Their records certainly showed that they were purchased.
They wouldn't take my word that I had mailed them as per their instructions, so I'm out two shirts.
They could have kept a customer by accepting my word.

Needless to say, I'm finished with Beane, as is my family.

And this has nothing to do with your question, but the mention of Beane ripped off an old scab with me.

4. Eek! We've been loyal Bean customers for decades. They've been golden for us

We use their winter boots and we've had absolutely zero problems getting perfect service from them.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Maybe we've just been lucky but we've had dozens of good transactions with them.

5. My ex returned a pair of 20 year old Bean boots that the rubber was cracking on.

Brand new pair - no questions asked.

3. I once returned two bottles of shampoo/ conditioner to Walgreens

After I used a bit of both. They made my scalp really itchy and weird. I told the walgreens manager that I used them once, but he still took em back

Returning shitty stuff rules
