Winter sports - which ones do you do?

I used to cross country ski but was never very good. Give up trying to skate as a young kid, kept falling and hurting myself.

But I decided I am not sitting inside and being bored all winter ... I bought snowshoes from REI. Looking forward to trying that out. They are having a free class, Introduction To Snowshoeing, the week after Thanksgiving.

1. Hauling, splitting, and stacking firewood.

Then hauling it into the house, and hauling the ashes out.

Snow shoveling...not so much. As little as I can get away with.

Shoveling frozen manure, shoveling manure in mud, shoveling manure in snow...

Ice skating without the blades getting to the barn and back, to the truck and back, etc...

Road skating in my truck to get anywhere.

Breaking ice in stock tanks.

Unrolling and setting up hoses, then undoing them, draining them and coiling them back up, every time I need to fill a water tank.

10. Wait, are you me or am I you?? That's exactly the sum of MY winter "sports"!!

I'll add wrestling with a blow dryer on a frozen hydrant.

Trying to catch the filly frolicking in the "big paddock" covered in 6 inches of snow who WON'T be caught.

Getting on the roof to shovel the massive snow drift off (without falling off the roof yourself).

Cleaning water buckets in subzero weather.

19. Sounds like we are on the same team.

I've done the blow dryer on hydrant challenge. My roofs are sloped enough that snow will slide off; in the case of the barn, it slides off right in front of the stall doors.

5. Cross country skiing and ice skating

Hoping for snow this year....didn't have enough to ski at all last year and the pond didn't even freeze hard enough to safely skate. (We live in northern PA).

8. Don't do outside stuff. Coach cheerleading during the winter, though.

9. Snowshoeing

Back when I was much younger and healthier, I had miles of trails in the woods that I enjoyed snowshoeing on. It was tough going first making the trails but after a hard base was made, it was relatively easy walking even after a heavy snowfall.

11. Competitive Snow Blowing and Shoveling

One neighbor and I compete to see who's the first to clear the sidewalk of our mutual next door neighbor. We're tied, as of last year.

12. Winter sports?

My favorite is x-country skiing. And let's face it, x-country skiing is what you make it. If you prefer to "walk" with you skis, great! You are out doors, exercising and enjoying yourself. But if you plan to "skate-ski", a bit more rigorous - well, that's great too.

The most important thing is to get outside during those winter months and just DO something! Winters become much more enjoyable!

13. Hockey, curling, downhill skiing, and the most fun of all ....

skiing behind a snowmobile. It's a little scary the first time, but if you haven't tried this, you really should.

14. I live in Florida - winter sports are laughing at the tourists

And making fun of the snowbirds wearing plaid shorts and black socks with sandals!

As a kid, weekends this time of year were spent picking oranges to send to relatives up north - some of the 'up north' relatives lived in Alabama and sent us pecans in exchange.

The one time I was a place that had enough snow to use skis or snow shoes in, I got in my truck and drove SOUTH!

16. Snoeshoeing

I never took a class. My husband showed me how to do it. It's really easy. I'd recommend poles in heavy snow. I fell once and hyper-extended my arm trying to stop my fall in 4 feet of snow. My hand never hit the ground.

Enjoy and Let it Snow!!

18. Bird-feeding and watching.

Soup-making. Undercover reading. Cocoa-sipping.

Sometimes four-wheel driving, but only if school isn't cancelled.
