Take a breath. Hold it again as above. Repeat till the hiccups are gone.

It has never failed me.

Does this still work if you've had a "bit" to drink?

I'm thinking that's the root cause...

You have to keep at it, plus start as soon as you get the hiccups. It's harder to do if you've had the hiccups for a while.

Sorry!

I came in to post this exact same thing. I don't remember where I heard it first but it has never failed me...You're the first person I've ever seen mention it since I first heard of it. When I tell people they think I'm tricking them for my own amusement.

But if I was gonna do that I'd just tell them what my grandma always told me: "Hiccups? Sing! It won't help your hiccups but it will be funny for the rest of us!"

I heard the water trick first at a party a long time ago. It works a lot better when you're not completely loaded and bending forward can mean a face-plant ... I recommend spotters. Trust me, people. But yep, it always works for me, too.

Just put some on the spoon and try to swallow as much as you can before it dissolves in your mouth.

7. hiccups are a throat spasm

swallowing works like a mini massage to stop it. Not a big swallow, but lots of little ones. That's the theory behind the spoonful of sugar remedy, or bending over to drink from the wrong side of the glass, which forces you to take tiny swallows.
But it's easier and more effective to just understand that it's about swallowing a lot.

Get a glass of water and do tiny little sips, swallow swallow swallow swallow as many times as you can.

I get hiccups when I eat hot peppers, this always cures it - pretty darn fast, too.

Went outside into cold air for a couple of minutes.

When I came back inside, I realized they were gone.

The best way is to lie on your back on the floor with your legs up on a bed or couch, but just being on your back helps. Apply pressure right in the bread box (hard pressure) - that interrupts the diaphragm spasms. THEN breath in as deeply as you can, suck in a little more, and then suck in a little more (it helps if you've played a wind instrument). Hold your breath and count until you know you're well passed the expected interval and then SLOWLY (as slow as you can) exhale. Don't move for a couple of minutes or you'll have to do it all over again.

I hold my breath and swallow several times, that almost always stops them.
