3. I found the book passable but grossly overhyped

Probably see the film, though.

8. Most of the top books in the "zombie apocalypse" genre

aren't exactly Shakespeare. World War Z is a good book by genre standards, but I'd agree that on an overall level, it's not great. However, it does a nice job of giving a world-wide perspective of the zombie apocalypse, instead of just focusing on one small group or groups of survivors like much of the genre (The Walking Dead, The Night of the Living Dead movie and its sequels, Day by Day Armageddon, Plague of the Dead, etc)

4. holy shit!

I admit that I was worried that they were diverting so much from the book, but it looks like we're actually going to see the on-the-ground chaos at the start of a zombie outbreak.

5. Okay. I was wrong. The movie looks FAAARRR more suspenseful than the book was.

Two very totally different experiences and both look like they're going to hit it out of the ballpark!

7. they really changed the zombies from the book

in the book, they were the slow shuffling zombies of Night of the Living Dead, or even The Walking Dead.

The movie seems to have them to be "fast" zombies like 28 Days Later or I Am Legend.

9. Meh

if they wanted to make another generic zombie movie that's great and all, just call it something else.

This looks like it has nothing to do with the books (which did not follow around one guy, include fast zombies, or have this fast paced action style).

Really WWZ doesn't lend itself to a movie format. At best it could be a trilogy (things going to hell, people getting back up on their feet and surviving, then retaking the planet).

Ideally it would have been shot band of brothers style as a mini series following a common plot but each episode focusing on different aspects of the conflict. Some more lighthearted. Some dark and soul crushing.

10. It is going to be a trilogy

so they may be planning on doing what you said, but who knows. The writers who did LOST came in and re-wrote this script, so I have hope.

11. Ah I did not know that

I still feel it would be better as the mini series but maybe it won't be entirely awful.

As a recreation of the book that is. It might be a good movie in its own right.
