1. Ten to one someone alerts on you.

To the Alerter: Look up the word in the dictionary before you do.

2. ?

.
.
.
From Dictionary.com
.
"a person from an English-speaking country: used as a derogatory term by Latin Americans"
.
.
.
The only time I've had it applied to me directly here in Tucson was when I first moved here. I opened
a gate leading into my apartment complex at the same time a Mexican man (probably in his early 30's)
was coming out.
.
He said, very mildly derisively, "Hi, gringo." -- JUST as I very pleasantly said, "Hello."
.
He looked a little guilty and stepped aside to let me go through first.
.
.
.
The more I thought about it, the cooler an encounter I realized that it had been.

6. I'll accept "a derogatory term for a person from an English speaking country."

I had my best fight on the unmoderated internet with a woman, who was otherwise brilliant, but failed to realize that "gringo" was not a racist term, directed only to white people. To get my point across, I told her my latina cousins would playfully call me gringa. I was actually proud of it because it meant that they saw me as an American. Why would anyone be offended in that?

7. Because there's already a word for "American".

It's American. Not gringo.

Gringo is offensive. I know this because it offends me. Once informed that a person finds a certain word or phrase offensive isn't a good progressive supposed to stop using said term?

8. I don't use it. I'm just not offended by it.

But reading over the comments, I can see how it would offend others.

3. During the days of creation . . .

. . . . God was sending down attributes to the various lands of planet earth. Everything was being distributed fairly evenly. A beautiful lake here, a nice forest there, a river over there. But at one point an angel distracted God, and way too many attributes landed in one place. North America. Beautiful and vast forest. Plains with Bison. The Great Lakes. Niagra Falls, The Mississippi and other amazing rivers. Not one but two oceans. The Grand Canyon. Yosemite. After a few minutes of this God's assistant, in alarm, pointed this out to God. That one land was getting far too many riches and far too much beauty. But the deed was done.
God agreed with the angel that it was unfair, thought about it for a few moments, and said: "I know how to perfectly balance this out. I'll just put the Gringos there.
