The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just got a new tattoo, it's a Chinese symbol.
I thought it meant love and peace in the new year.
One day a dear friend of mine from China told me what it really says:
"Stupid man has no idea what Chinese tattoo says."
And the other arm reads:
"Made in China"

(904 posts)...about a stripper who has a chinese character tatooed onto her that really means 'with hot sauce', cribbed off of a chinese food menu by a tatooist who can't read chinese.....he told her it meant something about love and respect or something like that....

Hello everybody! This is my first. but definitely not my last, post on this site. I was browsing around the internet and saw Lady Freedom Return's photo of a tattoo she was going to get. Well, it just so happens that I found the original picture of that too (it was on a medical blog strangely enough) and thought it was tattoo worthy. I gave it to a very close friend of mine and she drew her own rendition of it. She was a tattoo artist and intended to be my artist, but she lost her battle with cancer before I could get it done. It is so special to me now. It's taken on so much meaning. As all of you probably know, a phoenix is symbolic of resurrection, life after death, rising from the ashes...being an atheist...it is a bit of wishful thinking on my part. Anyways, here it is. Apologies for the less than ideal photo quality. I live by myself and can't afford a good camera.

(50,552 posts)Party pooper time: Tattoo shops have books of Chinese glyphs. Each is carefully labeled as to its meaning. Most people with tats just get something off the shop wall.
Having said that, it might be entertaining to see someone get 'General Tso's Chicken' on purpose.

(24,926 posts)most Chinese tats in this country are legit, but when I ask the wearer what the tat means, more often than not, it's not a very good translation. I remember one person saying that their tat meant "love," but it was actually the character for friendship.

(9,465 posts)I think I'd be too tempted to mess with Westerners' heads. After spending twelve hours a day in some grim factory making beanie babies for 40 cents an hour, I'd have to conclude that Americans are all crazy to spend their money on this shit. Then I'd do something sarcastic, like make a bunch of jewelry with writing on it that said "This foolish woman thinks these ideograms say 'Good Luck', but they don't".
At least that's always been my fear when tempted to buy anything with an unfamiliar language written on it.
