Do you have nicknames for your pets?

Or am I just weird or both?

I have five cats and I rarely call them by their "official" name.

Dee Dee = Mrs. Kitty
Mischief = Mr. Kitty or My Chief
Nugget = Blackie or Flopper (He hasn't mastered laying down on someone gracefully, it's a flop)
Grendel = Grin Grin
Chatterbox = C-box or Fat Chat.

She was a kitten. The person who had rescued her is a dog person, and didn't really have much to feed her, so she had cheese for dinner. She also didn't get much of a chance to have her morning constitutional before I received her and took her to the vet. Cheese poop is stinks worse than anything.

I have been lucky. All of my kitties are or were really good in the carriers. The only exception was when my dearly-departed first kitty was becoming hyperthyroid. It was a long slog until her levels were to a point where she could get radioiodine therapy. Meanwhile, she was a giant pee factory with the occasional bladder infection. The thyroid problem made her drink a lot, so I learned to put a towel in her crate. Poor thing.

they sort of have the same nicknames

Nikki is often Nikki-poo or Nikki-pooter

Lucy...Lucy-poo or Lucy-pooter

They are also "Pretty girls" and "Crazy pups".

Nikki is way smaller than Lucy, so she is "Shrimperd" (Shrimp + Shepherd)

Lucy is more timid than Nikki, so we often call her "Poodle-perd"

I call the puppy (real name: Otis) Buddy, Buster, Little Buddy, Little Fella, Big Fella, stuff like that. My 11 year old son called him Oatbag for a while, but we kinda put a stop to that.

Fri Aug 24, 2012, 02:37 PM
Aug 2012

The name we call them, the name only other cats use, and the secret name only the cat himself knows. Anyway, we generally have nick-names for all of them:

Cyra - Kittycat
Loki - Beaker (because his squeaky meow was reminiscent of Beaker from the Muppet Show)
Beau - BoBo (or, when he's being bad, Darth BoBo)
Nissa - Fuzzybutt
Skillywidden - Skills

Cyra and Loki (our two oldest) sadly passed about six months ago, and I'm still not over it. The rest are popping along full steam, thanfully.

as she grew out of kittenhood, the ferret-like aspect became less and less pronounced, so we wrote down a few possibilities for more dignified names and put them on slips of paper, which we then put in a glass bowl in front of her. Yes, she really did pick one out; from that point on, she was "Elsa".

I wanted to name her Sally after my mom's cousin (my West coast mom) who was a great advocate for animals.
To ease the transition to her new name I called her Sally Freckles, which morphed to Sally Fweckoes, Sally Huevos, and Huevos Rancheros. Also Puppy-girl, Wupster-girl, Sow'ry Pepboes or Wepoes. My husband calls her Smilin' Edwina, and son calls her Laughing Sal after she has been chasing a ball and she's panting.

I admit that there's something seriously wrong with me because I have given similar names to all my pets. I notice that it all began in about 1969 while I was helping the Indians on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay when i was young. I used to bring food and water to the protesting Indians and one of them had a very playful dog on the island he named "Shitter". I found that so hilarious every time he called his dog that I guess it subconsciously affected me.

I would get bood off a karoke stage if I sang around people but my dog loves our two songs. The first one is the 'feeding time' song which I totally made up. Our second song is my version of Clementine. It swaps out the word 'darling' for 'doggie' and Clementine for 'nose is blue'. Verse 1 ends with 'I love you', verse 2 ends with 'loves me too'. There are no other words to this song.

67. I'm doing well if I can remember to call them by their actual name
Sun Aug 26, 2012, 06:58 AM
Aug 2012

My dog that died last summer I never once called by his given name. He was always either Boo or Boo-Boo from the first day he came home. I had to make a conscious effort to call him by his given name at the vet's office or talking to certain people about him that only knew him by his given name. Other than that I also called him a long list of other nick names... pookie bear, bear dog, dog bear, fuzzy butt, fuzzy bum bum, silly funny bunny pants (this seemed to be his favorite), dingus, monkey boy, monkey pants, boo-boo bear, etc. I know there were others but off the top of my head can't remember them.

The dog I have now I call divvy or dippy most often, but lately I've been calling him puppa wuppa even more because that's what the little girl next door christened him, and it's rubbing off on me... "who's a big puppa wuppaaaaa? yes, you are! oh, yes! yes you are!" I also refer to him as The Thundering Herd, but I don't actually call HIM that... just when I mention him sometimes.

My first dog I always called by his given name until he got to about age 5 when he started showing the symptoms of sebaceous addenitis which made him stink to high heaven. Ever after he was Stinky. Even after he didn't stink anymore the name seemed to suit him.

When I was a kid we had a cat that had a stroke and ever after she leaned to the left a bit and wasn't all that great at negotiating doorways if she was going too fast. Since the stroke we always called her Tilt. I thought it was much more cute then her real name (which was kind of a dumb one).
