My son was about 10 or so, and the guy said he just enjoyed giving things to kids. It was like Gandalf's walking staff, and this was right after the Lord of the Rings movies which my son loved, so it was really special.
We still have it--by now, it's more a keepsake or reminder of the guy's generosity and kindness than of any Renaissance Faire awesomeness. not that my son has entirely grown out of that.

It's lovely, the way that acts of kindness resonate for years and years. It really was an amazing and beautiful thing for that man to do, for no reason other than sweet and simple human kindness.
