Random kindness at Wailua Falls in Kauai today

Vacaying with the fam in Kauai - awesome island, love it here.

Anyway, while we were getting into the car after seeing Wailua Falls there's a local weaving baskets from palm fronds.

He wants to give us one - or more specifically, he wants to give the kids one.

I am a little hesitant, expecting a sales pitch. But no, he wants to GIVE one to our kids. He told us he gave 5 away earlier and wants to give one to the kids.

That kind of kindness is rare.

1. He is probably one of the few humans that does not get

his psyche all jacked out of shape from reading political message boards every day, so that random act of kindness may be all too common for him. Living in a paradise like Kauai probably helps too.

Take a helicopter flight into Waimea Canyon, sort of a miniature Grand Canyon, and have the pilot dip the copter blades into the edge of the giant waterfall to make a great rainbow. Unforgettable ride.

2. several years ago a guy at a Ren Fair (sp?) gave my son a really beautiful magic staff

My son was about 10 or so, and the guy said he just enjoyed giving things to kids. It was like Gandalf's walking staff, and this was right after the Lord of the Rings movies which my son loved, so it was really special.

We still have it--by now, it's more a keepsake or reminder of the guy's generosity and kindness than of any Renaissance Faire awesomeness. not that my son has entirely grown out of that. It's lovely, the way that acts of kindness resonate for years and years. It really was an amazing and beautiful thing for that man to do, for no reason other than sweet and simple human kindness.
