She was only the third dog our family has ever owned since I was 7 or so. We had Meggie for 17 years. A long life-span for a dachshund. I had never been present for this sort of thing before. I was there for my mother, for whom Meggie was her constant companion, and for my brother, who adopts rescue dogs (Meggie was an AKC-bred dachshund, though...). Tough day.
I love you all...

(2,441 posts)It is an incredibly tough thing to go through. I'm sure it was so traumatic for your mom - 17 years, wow.
I'm so sorry. I've only experienced it once, with my old Tabitha cat - but yes, it makes for a very tough day. I'm glad that your mom & brother had you there. Shared comfort & grief really makes a difference, is what I found.
Peace to you all, & safe passage to Meggie. She's very fortunate to have had your family to love her so much. Take care.

(41,933 posts)There's something about holding that sweet head and saying what they always long to hear, "You're a good dog" as they go.
You did what she needed. And it's so hard. Thinking of you all.

(30,947 posts)I know the pain she must have felt after having to send her beloved companion to doggie heaven after so many years.
I had to put my Rottweiler down after 10 years. She had cancer and was just short of her 13th birthday. I still grieve every time I think of her, which is often, since I have her ashes.
